Student Voices
From the Address of
Cristina Matthews, President of the Student Nurses Association
Given at the Baccalaureate Convocation for Incoming Students
September 24, 2003
Perhaps one of the most significant things that I have learned through
my years at UMass Boston is to utilize the resources around you. One of the most
useful is to make contact with your fellow students and form study groups.
I have found that study groups are great in helping you to understand
the course material. The days of memorization are over. The concepts you
learn in your nursing classes must be understood, not memorized.
In my Leadership class this week, Dr. Haussler gave us some interesting
statistics which said that you retain 10% of what you read, 20% of what
you hear, 30% of what you see (there were many more and won’t list
them all) and 90% of what you teach. Well, being in study groups gives
you that opportunity to teach and therefore to retain what you are trying
to learn. The give and take, the explaining of concepts in a group setting,
I have found, is one key to success in the nursing program.
I hope you have as wonderful of an experience here as I have had. Good
luck and welcome to UMass Boston.
