BBN Objectives

Project objectives are tied to the goals and mission of the CNHS, each is measurable, as indicated by the changes that will be documented over time. The objectives address at least one outcome under the national goals set by Bureau of Health Professions, as noted below. Linkages to the community, through the Kids into Health Care Pilot is also noted, as are objectives that directly relate to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services' Healthy People 2010. These objectives will be achieved by the end of year 3 of the BBN project:

Objective 1

Improve access to the nursing profession by disadvantaged students and underrepresented populations. (National Goal I/II)

Indicators:
80 minority/disadvantaged students will be admitted to the BBN Program over 3 years
90% of BBN students will graduate
90% of BBN students will pass general education courses and a writing proficiency exam

Objective 2

Increase culturally responsive excellent health care by diverse nurses to diverse populations. (National Goal I/II, HP2010)

Indicators:
90% of students will pass the HESI/NCLEX examinations

Objective 3

Demonstrate the efficacy of a rigorous student nurse retention program that is framed by a “Culture of Community" learning model. (National Goal II)

Indicators:
100% of BBN students will meet with Advisors monthly
100% of BBN students will meet with their mentors as required
100% of students will use web-based supports
100% of students will report feedback on BBN activities

Objective 4

Enhance faculty knowledge of and sensitivity to cultural competence, student support, and diversity in underrepresented, at-risk students. (National Goal II)

Indicators:
100% of faculty will receive Cultural Competency Training each year
90% of BBN students will report satisfaction with faculty support

Objective 5

Pilot Kids into Health Careers (KIHC) program in the Dorchester Public Schools to introduce nurses, nursing students and nursing as a career to minority children and their families. (Linkages to community middle schools) (National Goal I)

Indicators:
50% of BBN students will be placed in KIHC middle-schools
50% of BBN students will become mentors to KIHC students
80% of KIHC participants and families will report nursing as a positive career choice

Objective 6

Provide stipends, scholarships, and laptop computers to qualified minority/disadvantaged students who are accepted into the BBN program to learn about computers in education from the BBN website and its links.

Indicators:
100% of BBN students eligible for stipends and scholarships will receive these
50% of BBN students will work 20 hours or fewer
100% of BBN students will be adept at using their laptops (as measured by pre and post examination)
